Built on the site of the Bloomington's first court, John McBarnes commissioned the construction of Illinois' first WWI Memorial building in 1921. Mr. McBarnes, a very successful farmer, hired legendary architect, Arthur Moratz to design the building. By May 27, 1922 the cornerstone was set featuring the largest public gathering in Bloomington-Normal history. The event was covered by Popular Mechanics magazine in 1922. On New Year's Eve, 1930, The McBarnes Building played host to a concert performed by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. This iconic building served as a gathering place for war veterns until a devastating fire engulfed the building in September of 1972. It was then that the building was rebuilt and converted to commercial use. Today, the storied McBarnes Building stands as an architectural study of balance, symmetry and perfected proportions. It is a grand reminder of strong roots and history yet its modernization nods to the future. Now it's time to write your chapter. Let us help you design a space for your business or non-profit; space that pays homage to the past while inspiring your team to create an even better future.
